ISHHR brings together professionals and people affected by trauma and human rights abuses from all over the world every few years for a major conference to combat these effects.

International Capacity Building Workshops and Conference on Health and Human Rights is a four day distinctive event created by ISHHR to bring together health specialists, human rights advocates, social workers and other professionals that work to eliminate gross human rights violations and assist affected people all around the world.  Participants share knowledge on how to combat the effects of trauma, torture and human rights abuses on mental health and gain new skills.

Participants of ISHHR workshops and conferences reach out to tens of thousands of torture survivors and survivors of gross human rights' violations around the world that benefit from the services of colleagues that receive training about the latest developments in rehabilitation techniques to be used  towards creating healthier communities following conflicts, exchange information with colleagues from all around the world working under different circumstances, and probably add to the literature.

Your centres might have been affected from the radical decrease in UNVFVT grants for 2011. As for ISHHR, these cuts have been shattering, since UNVFVT funding subclass for training and seminars for professionals assisting victims was suspended for 2011. We need our colleagues from developing countries to make it to Tbilisi this October, as much as we need those from the developed world to make this global networking and learning experience meaningful to all. For more information on sponsoring this event go to become a sponsor.

Message from the Secretary General

Recent developments in the world, particularly public uprisings in Arab world against the many long standing leaders who battle to stay in power, might add to the number of people that suffer from torture and other forms of cruel treatment. I would like to congratulate all colleagues and courageous peoples in the region for their struggle for social equality and human rights.

Thousands of ISHHR members that work with survivors of gross human rights violations assist individuals and communities to overcome the impact of their traumatic experiences and regain control of their lives. For colleagues that work in remote or conflict areas, there is often no support or resources at all to deal with this. That’s why ISHHR’s 9th Capacity Building Workshops and Conference on Health and Human Rights is a unique opportunity for all of us from around the globe to share knowledge and experiences. The upcoming four day event in Tbilisi, Georgia is taking place from 6 to 9 October this year. It is an exceptional opportunity that offers a set of remarkable workshops to expand your skills, as well as a fine selection of fascinating keynotes and presentations, not to mention that every coffee break is a ‘’world café’’, offering a unique occasion for global networking.

It is our passion to help create a world without torture and we work hard to expand the knowledge available to colleagues that deal with human rights violations and its consequences in the turbulent world today. We are currently looking for partners that may wish to sponsor a particular workshop, donate towards scholarships for third world participation or the involvement of women delegates.

Please contact Janset Berzeg at ISHHR Secretariat coordinator@ishhr.com in confidence to support this international event.

An affordable selection of accommodation options will be soon added to this website for your convenience, along a with tourist information.

I hope to see many of you at the 9th Capacity Building Workshops and Conference in Tbilisi, Georgia this October!

All the best,

Jorge Aroche

Secretary General
